THE PERSEPHONE MYTH IN LITERATURE
Public Lecture by Prof Peter Vassallo

Date: May 3, 2011
Venue: Gateway Hall E, University of Malta (Msida)
Time: 18.30 - 19.45

Organised by the Malta Classics Association
Email:classicsmaltasoc@gmail.com
Click here to open the Facebook event page

Synopsis: The figure of Persephone evolved from a decorative metaphor into a living goddess (Kore) who embodied
the most spiritual aspects of ancient Greek religion. While scholars began to focus on the Eleusinian Mysteries of Demeter
and Persephone, poets and novelists explored the divisions between mother and daughter occasioned by patriarchal marriage.
Professor Vassallo will examine the appropriation of this Greek fertility myth by some of the major literary authors
over the centuries. Reference will be made to Homer, Dante, Milton, Dante Gabriel Rossetti , Swinburne, D. H. Lawrence
and Modernist Literature

on our Facebook Page, we have compiled the most popular requests. Please use the poll below
to choose your favourite option.

(Note: if you choose 'Other', please email us your idea at info@desa.org.mt)
